The science of metrology is fascinating. Take the triple point of water, the technology of precision thermometers. The pressure and temperature of pure water, pure ice, and pure water vapor coexisting in thermodynamic equilibrium is the triple point of water used for calibration. Triple point cells filled with hydrogen, argon, mercury, neon, oxygen, and water can achieve exact temperatures, and so these are used by ITS-90 to delineate 6 of its 14 temperature points. The first precision thermometer was not an invention. It was a development that began with Philo and Hero of Alexandria, who noticed that air expands and contracts. In the 11th century Avicenna demonstrated the degree of heat or cold in the air by using a tube filled with water.
